OUR VISION: TOWARD JUST AND SUSTAINABLE SOCIETY

The 20th Century of continued wars and violence has passed. Yet we are facing no smaller challenges of violence and injustice today. Transnational feminist movements have been challenging very social structures that lead to violence and suppression. Standing on feminist perspective that links gender, North-South relations and environment, the AJWRC works for democratic Japanese society based on respect for human rights and gender equality, and for fair and sustainable global society. Major fields that we focus on are as follows:

VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN

In order to abolish all the forms of violence against women, we work on issues of armed conflicts, military bases, trafficking, prostitution, domestic violence, and gender-based suppression under nationalisms and religious fundamentalisms.

SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

What does economic globalization mean to women in Japan and in the world? We challenge the existing politico-economic institutions that lead to poverty and gender inequality, tackling issues such as free trade, development aid, environmental degradation, migration, restructuring and increasing instability of women labour, and social security systems.

ALTERNATIVE POLITICS AND EMPOWERMENT OF WOMEN

To achieve alternative political and judicial institutions based on human rights and gender equality, and to empower women to play more active roles in all spheres of society, we examine the issues of international politics, legal systems, Japan’s war responsibilities, women’s participation in politics, education, and information communication technologies.
